With summer just around the corner, that means bikinis, short shorts and tank tops. All of that means you probably bust out your razor more often or start waxing. When you shave or wax more often, chances are those pesky ingrown hairs and red bumps start to surface in your bikini area, underarms and even on your legs. This can be very annoying when you want to look your best! Here are some tips on treating and preventing those pesky bumps and lumps:

  1. Ingrown hairs are hairs that curl back and grow into the skin, which causes inflammation, redness and can even lead to infection. The best way to treat ingrown hairs is to exfoliate regularly. Use a good scrub and a loofah in the shower at least once a week. Switch out your loofah often to avoid bacteria.
  2. If you want extra exfoliation, try chemical exfoliation. Try an acne wash that contains salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. You can also try a chemical exfoliation at a salon or spa. Make sure to moisturize well after you exfoliate, especially a chemical exfoliation.
  3. If you are experiencing redness and inflammation, try an aspirin mask. Dissolve two aspirin pills in water until you make a paste. Then apply to the affected area for a few minutes and then rinse off.
  4. You can also apply tea tree oil or aloe vera using a clean cotton ball to calm the skin. This is great for sensitive skin because it is natural.
  5. If you have severe bumps or if they aren’t going away, you may need to see a doctor and get a prescription.
  6. Also remember to never pick, itch or create friction with clothing in the area you have ingrown hairs or bumps. It will only slow your body’s natural healing process and your treatments won’t work as well.
  7. After you treat them, you’ll want to know how to prevent them from showing up again. Never shave or wax irritated skin. It will only further irritate the skin and could lead to an infection. Also, exfoliate the area before you shave or wax and soak or steam the area in warm water or steam to open the pores. Always use a clean, sharp razor and shave in the direction of your hair’s growth. Last but not least, don’t pull your skin tight to get a closer shave because this will just lead to ingrown hairs.
